The Hillingdon Chamber logo

The new logo adopted by the Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce in 2011 takes elements from the London Borough of Hillingdon’s badge to influence the design.  The seven pointed star component of the design represents the seven regions of Hillingdon and the green circle represents London’s green belt, where of course Hillingdon is situated.

When the College of Arms granted armorial bearings to the Borough, they included in the Grant of Arms a badge in addition to the coat of arms. This was to enable the Borough to have a simple device for use in those cases where it might not wish to use its full coat of arms.

The badge is described in heraldic terms in the Grant of Arms as ‘a roundel vert surmounted of a mullet of seven points argent charged with a mural crown gules’. In plain language this means ‘a green disc with a seven pointed silver star on it and a crown made of red bricks in the middle of the star.

The seven points of the star represent the seven districts – Harlington, Hayes, Northwood, Ruislip, Uxbridge, West Drayton and Yiewsley – named in the titles of the four local authorities which were joined together to form the London Borough of Hillingdon, whose single civic authority is symbolised by the red mural or walled crown. The green roundel represents the green belt round London in which Hillingdon is situated.

The use of badges is much older than the use of coats of arms. Badges have been used for many centuries as signs of community or allegiance and for marking property, whether moveable or immovable.
